Sensible Cinema

The First Unitarian Universalist Society held an in person and virtual screening in San Francisco, coordinated by Melvin Starks and Larry Dano. The Society is a welcoming community to all who seek a congregation grounded in love, committed to caring for one another, supporting one another in spiritual growth, and dedicated to building a compassionate, just and sustainable world. Their Sensible Cinema series provides informative and provocative films that speak to issues of social justice, serving UUSF and the community.

This symposium examined the rise of the international opposition to eugenics as well as explored the debates within the eugenics camp. The event traced the growing scientific distrust of eugenic thought in the 20th century before its genocidal application in Nazi Germany. Moreover, the 2-day symposium examined how eugenic discourse has resurfaced and has been contested in the decades since World War II in science, culture, and through political activism.
